Have your wedding in a village: Montalto Ligure, to experience the romance of getting married in an Italian medieval village, immersed in antiquity and unspoilt nature.

Montalto Ligure, located in Valle Argentina, is a high up medieval village that dates from pre 1000 A.D., founded by groups of coastal inhabitants in search of escape from the invading Langobards and Saracens.

The legend narrates that it was the refuge of two young newlyweds who were escaping from the law of ” jus primae noctis ” which the Count Oberto of Ventimiglia claimed the right to excercise in the area. Joined by many friends, they formed the first residential nucleus of Montalto (from the  Latin “mons Autus”) that fell under the jurisdiction of the counts of Ventimiglia until mid-1200 when it became a territory of the Republic of Genova, forming part of the Podesteria of Triora.

Here you can appreciate the interior stone walls and arches, and flooring made of old slates called “ciappe”, and in the center, the coat of arms of the town also made by a local artist out of slate. Montalto is a romantic destination and lovers of all ages who visit the town are fascinated by it –  this very picturesque corner of Italy is the ideal backdrop for those who wish to celebrate their marriage here.
